William Henry Dunning, Age 20

Private, 24432, 1st Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry.

William was the elder brother of John and the first son of Mrs Fellows, According to the 1901 census he was 3 years older than John being 5 in 1901. William was killed in action at Flers on the Somme on the 18th September 1916, When C & D companies attacked and took the German position known as the Quadrilateral, A & B companies then moved on to the 2nd objective. The Battalion was relieved that night after suffering 20 other ranks killed in action, William was one of these. The battle at Flers has gone down in history as being the battle that Tanks where used for the very first time.

William's body was never found and his name appears on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Face 12a & 12d,

Extra Notes: William’s father was William Henry Dunning and his mother was Sarah Ann Dunning maiden name Briscoe, John’s father died in 1899, and his mother remarried to Joseph Fellows, in the 1911 census William is aged 15 and Working as a moulder, the family are living at 10 Chapel Street, Dawley, he Enlisted at Ironbridge into King's Shropshire Light Infantry, regimental number 24432.
